When horizons change, new dreams are made.

Turn back the clock about 100 years and allow the rhythms of Charleston to blend in with the seductive sound of the waves. Around 1920, Nevlunghavn was a favorite summer retreat for the high society from Christiania. The horizons were no longer an end, but a tempting beginning. It was perhaps this that inspired Thor Heyerdahl who grew up in Larvik. In the area around Larvik you will also find Farrisvannet and the world-famous beech forest. Nature, history and culture… look up and expand your personal horizons.

Did you know…

Steping back in time. Just south of Larvik there’s a small village called Nevlunghavn. One hundred years ago, this was a favorite summer retreat for the high society in Christiania. When you lie on the beach and close your eyes you may notice the faint sound of laughter and Charleston blending in with the sound of lazy waves…
Shopping. Kaupang in Skiringssal was Norway's first city. In the ninth century, it was estimated that as many as almost 600 people lived there. However, it did not last long. Shopping and business were a little more unpredictable in those days.
Food for thought. Throughout Larvik you will find poems and literary quotes for reflection and inspiration. The project was established in 2006 and was a collaboration between Louis Jacoby, the business community in Larvik and Larvik Municipality. “Alle dessa dagar som kom och gick. Inte visste jag at de var livet.” Hmmm… yes.

Largest and northernmost

The beech forest in Larvik is Norway’s largest and the world's northernmost beech forests. The story of Bøkeskogen is part of our ice age history. In other words, quite old. In the forest you will also find 83 burial mounds, the largest collection of burial mounds in Vestfold. We will organize a trip for you.
Mølen, far more than pebbles

The coast between Helgeroa and Nevlunghavn is one of Norway's most important cultural landscapes. Maybe not the first thing that springs to mind as you wander through this beautiful landscape. The area has 230 burial mounds, 19 large ones of about 25 - 35 meters and 192 smaller mounds. There’s history beneath your feet.
Out in the world with Thor

Thor Heyerdahl grew up in Larvik. This is where he developed his curiosity and urge to travel. Even at a young age, he was a little out of the ordinary and made a museum at home. The exhibition had a viper as its main attraction. Today you can look around his childhood home - don’t worry, the adder is gone.
