There’s Edvard Munch, obviously. It is said that the day he bought his first house, which was to become his home in Åsgårdstrand, was the happiest day of his life. There was a bit of fuss, but great artists are famed for their complicated personalities. Either way, Munch has left his mark on this scenic village. However, he was not the only famous artist around here. Oda Krogh was born in Åsgårdstrand and Fritz Thaulow was a regular guest. Enjoy the sun, soak up the atmosphere and take a break from “the world”.

• Famous ladies. Pikene på broen, The girls on the bridge, were painted down the road from Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand. A selfie tip for those interested in art. Speaking of selfies, Munch was a pioneer in "selfies" and took several pictures of himself. You could say that he was somewhat ahead of his time.

• Ouch! While on the subject of Munch… it was here that Edvard Munch managed to shoot a finger off after a heated dispute.

• Local spice. Skjærgården Gartneri in Åsgårdstrand is Norway's largest producer of spring onions. Herbs are also produced here. The production follows a nature-friendly method which keeps the ground fertile.

• Art and street life. Every year, the second weekend in June, the Åsgårdstrand Days are held with art exhibitions, concerts, market stalls and lots of people. The event kicks off in connection with the famous regatta Færederseilasen - also called Færder’n.
